What you’ll learn in this animation course

Animation is an evolving field. At Raffles, you’ll learn techniques developed by the masters of traditional animation and you’ll put them into practise using the very latest digital tools.

You’ll have room to experiment with methods tried and tested as well as explore new techniques that are still being developed and perfected.  Whether it’s a movie, a game or a projection mapping piece, 2D and 3D animation is sure to have an essential role to play in it.

The Bachelor of Arts (Visual Communication) majoring in Animation is a full-time, 3-year degree available at our Parramatta campus. You can choose to exit after two years, and receive an Associate Degree.

Semester 1

AC007: Computing for Design (6 credit points)
The purpose of this module is to introduce students to relevant design industry software. Students will develop functional competence in using this software to prepare, graphics and text, manipulate scanned and downloaded images and present material for publishing.

CC142: Ideas and Thought (6 credit points)
This subject seeks to introduce students to philosophy, culture and visual art. It discusses the interrelatedness of key philosophical, cultural and artistic ideas and encourages a scholarly way of thinking. Providing an overview of some of the major historical periods it focuses on an influential thinker of each age.

TV038: Moving Image (6 credit points)
This subject will familiarise students with the art of ‘the moving image’, including film, television, 3D games and animation. Students will receive a broad overview of both the industry and the art form. They will study its history and investigate a wide variety of genre, styles and media. They will learn the ‘language’ of the moving image, and begin to learn how to critique it.

TV040: Production Design (6 credit points)
Production Design is aimed at preparing students to work within the design department in the fields of film, television or games. Using practical assignments based around illustrations, students develop and refine their existing design and illustration skills.

Semester 2

DN019: Drawing, Design Principles and Colour Theory (6 credit points)
Students will be given an understanding and foundation in: basic drawing techniques; design elements and principles; colour mixing and colour theory (both practical and theoretical); composition; and professional mounting and presentation skills.

CT063: Animation (6 credit points)
This subject explores principles and techniques fundamental to all animation. Through a combination of lectures, study of animated films, practical class exercises and working with different mediums students will learn to animate movement. Animation is fun and students are encouraged to explore and play within their animation space.

CT064: 3D Studies (6 credit points)
This subject concentrates on the basic principles and concepts of 3D modelling, texturing, lighting and animation common to all 3D authoring software. It is a broad look at 3D and a primer for further specialised fields in the industry. The aim of this subject is to provide the student with a strong foundation of relevant tools and techniques within the 3D environment. Specifically, a reference image will be provided to create a 3D model, UV unwrap, texture map, apply lighting and output 10 seconds of animation. The final submission will showcase movement using the model and the camera.

CC143: Visual Communication (6 credit points)
Students will be exposed to history and theories of perception, cognition and communication. They will then apply these theories to design their own works. The aim is for students to be able to communicate to an audience effectively.

Semester 3

CT066: Character Design (6 credit points)
Students in this subject will develop the skills required to create and develop characters suitable for film, animation and games. Students will learn how to design dramatically and mechanically appropriate characters. With the huge advances in the digital media an important component of this subject is to expose the student to the technical skills required to deal with not only digital painting, but also the new and powerful technology behind Digital Sculpting Software.

CC145: History of Visual Communication (6 credit points)
This unit will enable learners to recognise, and understand, the major historical developments of Visual Communication through research of the major fine art and design movements. The course integrates factual historical knowledge with an exploration of the interpretations and theories surrounding historical change. The main objective in studying past art and design languages and forms is to give students a solid grounding and context for contemporary Visual Communication in regard to their own design practise.

TV042: Understanding Acting (6 credit points)
The aim of this subject is to familiarise the student with an actor’s skill set and how these skills apply to directing, acting and the performance. Students will apply fundamental acting theory through weekly practical exercises designed to build knowledge and confidence in the communication between actor, director and audience. Students from all disciplines are welcome! Any student interested in directing, acting, performance or just building confidence will find this subject refreshing, interesting and fun.

Semester 4

TV044: Story and Drama (6 credit points)
Story and drama are two important aspects of both linear and interactive moving imagery. This subject will teach students about these through a combination of exposure to each area’s key works, the study of classic drama/story methods and practical exercise. The students will also develop an idea from a one liner to a draft script.

CC144 Design Meaning and Culture (6 credit points)
This subject will allow learners to investigate contemporary design in relation to its cultural context. They will analyse aspects of their material world to familiarise themselves with the main contemporary approaches to and critiques of design. This subject gives them the knowledge and skills to analyse the interaction between design and various cultural and social values. Secondly, it alerts them to some of the social and ethical issues confronting professional designers. It also traces the discipline’s foundations and analyses texts about mainstream, class, gender, ethnic and youth subcultures.

CT067: Directing Animation (6 credit points)
The purpose of this subject is to learn the roles and responsibilities of the animation director. It also looks at the director as the creator, producer and visionary of animated content and also as the captain of the animation production crew. The subject revisits the medium of animation through the eyes of one of the most important roles an animator can aspire to.

CC139: Major Project (Part 1) (6 credit points)
This subject introduces students to a range of academic and professional research methods appropriate to visual communicators. Students will develop, present and negotiate an innovative project proposal and prepare a self-initiated brief. The purpose of this brief is to create a blueprint for the student’s Major Project to be finalised in the subject Major Project Part 2.

CC149: Internship Preparation (3 credit points)
This Industry Preparation will guide students through the process of taking the necessary steps in obtaining a position in an approved company. It will assist students to undertake appropriate research to investigate and familiarise themselves with the Industry and the nature of employment opportunities available in their Professional field. The students will acquire practical insights of what is required in preparing a Professional Job application, attending interviews and undertake formal negotiations with prospective Employers.

The aim of this subject to prepare portfolio and self-promotion material relevant to the student’s profession. Material may include building an online presence, creating appropriate portfolio’s for interviews, business cards, demonstration or show reels. CC141: Internship (6 credit points)
This subject will prepare students to enter into full-time employment in their area of specialization upon graduation. It will provide students with the opportunity to test their career aptitude and aid them adjusting from college to full-time employment. It will present students with the opportunity to develop attitudes conducive to effective interpersonal relationships, increase their sense of responsibility, and help them acquire good work habits. It will offer the opportunity for students to understand informal organizational interrelationships and provide in-depth knowledge of the formal functional activities of a participating organization.

PH044: Documentary Photography (6 credit points)
This is an elective subject that introduces the role and responsibilities of a photographer working within the complex field often referred to as: photojournalism, social documentary, press photography and street photography. The subject presents the role of photographer as story teller- as the creator of images to illustrate a narrative in support of news material most often appearing in the print media, as well as personal photographic projects. The subject investigates notions of narrative - how images combine with text to inform and give insight; objectivity (the attempt to create images that are authentic, fair, and an accurate representations of actual events) versus subjectivity (documenting one’s personal experience and regard of society).

PH035: Photography Essentials (6 credit points)
This subject introduces the initial process of image capture using digital photographic cameras and related equipment. This subject concentrates on the functions and use of DSLR cameras. Students are encouraged to learn through demonstration and practical application. The subject also introduces students to digital photography workflow, from file processing, to the final production of a photographic image (for both screen and print).

Students will learn technical skills used in digital video and audio creation. They will also gain an introductory knowledge of the creative aspects. In addition they will learn to integrate the skills and knowledge into their own professional streams.

The aim of this subject is to further develop skills, techniques and innovation in the design and production of professional motion graphics. The subject encourages extensive research and experimentation in producing original and exciting work, building a vocabulary that is firmly placed in the world of motion graphics.

CT070: Understanding Programming (6 credit points)
This subject will introduce games and gameplay programming concepts for those who want to be game artists and designers. These students will learn to analyse games, and gameplay, as well as examine genres and trends in game development. They will work singly and in small groups to develop game ideas, compare and contrast them with published games and then create documentation for a small prototype game.

CT092: Concept Art (6 credit points)
The aim of this subject is to further develop a student’s illustration skills to a higher level, that will enable them to work in the art department within the film, television, games and publishing industries. Using a number of practical illustration techniques, students are given an opportunity to learn about the classic elements of illustration and design using both traditional and digital methods.
