Student Spotlight: Willy Mulyadi
23 November 2016
Bali & Beyond
Raffles photography student Willy Mulyadi is preparing for his first solo exhibition, People of Ubud. Born in Jakarta, Indonesia, Willy is currently based in Sydney, but travelled back to Indonesia to undertake his photographic major work in Bali.
Students in the third year of our photography degree write their own brief for a major project within their chosen specialization. Unsurprisingly, Willy chose to focus on travel, having previously travelled to Mongolia (see the photobook here), Myanmar and New Zealand, photographing along the way. He says that he “enjoys meeting new people from different cultures.”
“People of Ubud is a documentary series depicting another side of Bali. Away from the stereotypical tourist activity, the daily life and religion of the friendly and humble Balinese people are revealed.”
Willy spent three weeks photographing in Ubud. He was there for Galungan, a Balinese celebration during which people from all around Bali gather in one village for prayer, processions, music and dancing.
